During the 8-hour manufacturing process of Spanx hosiery products, more than 40 women touch each pair.
Sara Blakely carried an old-fashioned Eastpack from the early 1990s to her first SPANX sales meeting at Neiman Marcus. While her friends begged her to swap the lucky red backpack for a Prada bag, she had no shame. It’s still her lucky bag, although the buyer at Neiman’s seeing Sara in SPANX may have worked more than the backpack – She showed off the SPANX under her white pants, and the buyer immediately said, “I’ll buy 3,000 pairs.”
Even in the midst of an economic downturn, luxury retailers who were most affected sold out of a year’s supply of Haute Contour by SPANX, the Dessert of Shapewear, within two months. When asked about the success of SPANX in the midst of a recession, founder Sara Blakely said, “Any item that makes women look and feel their best is recession proof.”
It took more than three years and 100 prototypes to create SPANX Bra-llelujah! Underwire Contour, now many top retailers’ best-selling bra.
After kick-starting a shapewear revolution, the company now makes more than 200 figure-fixing products – from back-fat busting bras to bum-boosting bodysuits.
Over 36,000 body-shapers are manufactured each day.
To date, more than 5.4 million Spanx Power Panties have been sold worldwide – when Oprah announced she’d “given up panties” and only wore Spanx, more than 20,000 pairs were sold that day alone.
Daniel Lawson, costume designer for U.S. drama Lipstick Jungle, dressed the show's entire cast in Spanx, saying “They take off five, eight pounds immediately!”
A Nordstrom employee encouraged our Spanx for Men efforts by telling us how often he sells Hide & Sleek camisoles to his male customers!
